How often should you get a skin fade?

Short answer: every two to three weeks. Longer answer: it depends on three things, and one of them is how fussy you are.

Why a fade goes off faster than a normal haircut

A skin fade is short at the bottom and longer at the top, and the whole effect depends on the blend between the two being invisible. The problem is that the shortest hair grows back first in proportional terms. Skin goes to grade half in about a week. That soft, clean bottom edge turns into a visible line, and once you can see where the fade starts, it has stopped being a fade.

A longer scissor cut can drift for six weeks and still look intentional. A skin fade cannot. That is the trade-off for how sharp it looks on day one.

The three things that change the answer

How fast your hair grows. Average is about half an inch a month, but it varies more than people think. If you notice yours going off at day ten while your mate gets three weeks, that is normal.

How high the fade sits. A high fade has more skin showing, so there is more area to grow out and it goes fuzzy sooner. A low fade hides its own growth for longer. If you are trying to stretch the time between cuts, ask for it lower.

How much contrast you asked for. A hard contrast between skin and the length on top looks brilliant fresh and untidy fast. A softer, dropped fade is more forgiving at week three.

A rough guide

If you want it looking its absolute sharpest all the time, every one to two weeks. If you want it looking good most of the time, every two to three weeks — this is where most of our regulars land. If it is for a specific event, book two or three days before, not the day before: a fade settles slightly and looks better on day two or three than it does an hour after you leave the chair.

Making one last an extra week

Ask for the fade a notch lower than you think you want. Do not try to tidy the edges yourself with a trimmer — it is the single fastest way to turn a three-week fade into a one-week fade, and we can always tell. Wash it less often than you think and use less product than you think; both make it look heavier as it grows. And book the next one before you leave, because the reason most people walk around with a grown-out fade is not vanity, it is diaries.
